Enhance the modern electric motorcycle experience for a safer & more engaging ride

DESIGN CHALLENGE

DESIGN CHALLENGE

The electric motorcycle market is growing, and motorcycle-related road incidents are still on the rise. According to the NHTSA, the amount of motorcyclists killed in traffic in 2021 was at a record high.

With electric motorcycles being increasingly appealing to a broader and newer public, due to lower barriers to entry, an opportunity to rethink a safer next-gen cockpit experience is emerging.

DESIGN PROCESS

I started by researching the state of user experience in the current market landscape to gather insights on the main painpoints. While ideating, 3D was used to test & validate solutions, and ensure a tangible foundation for the HMI experience.

Welcome to the new generation of electric motorcycles, aimed at thrill-seeking riders. The Vōlt Tracer brings a new level of integration, providing an uncluttered experience that enables the rider to stay fully focused on the road ahead.

CONCEPT

The Vōlt Tracer was inspired by the sleek silhouette of street tracker and scrambler motorcycles, making it a perfect candidate for city navigation. Here, the split-monocoque body offers an alternative take on minimalist construction, putting all the internals out of view.

STYLING

Communicating a feeling of electric purity while retaining the aggressiveness of gas motorcycles proved to be a captivating blend. To create this contrast, I used sharp angular lines, softened by smooth curves wrapping around the body.

Once the kickstand goes up, eyes on the road! " — Mark T.

REFRAMING

To find out what is truly essential to riders, and what they could part with, I asked 43 motorcyclists in a survey to rank motorcycle functions by importance — on and off the bike.

APPROACH

Based on the survey results analysis, three directions were made obvious for solving user painpoints and defining clear information hierarchy.

Declutter

Streamline UX by removing unwanted features

Distribute

Arrange information where most appropriate

Contextualize

Display information only when necessary

COCKPIT HMI

COCKPIT HMI

COCKPIT HMI

The Vōlt Tracer features a modern integrated HMI, splitting the traditional cluster in two separate displays on each side of the bars, freeing up the rider’s field of view from any obstruction. The commands stay within reach and keep the much needed tactile physical inputs & dials for immediate feedback.

DISTRIBUTED INTERFACES

Information is distributed to dedicated areas to reduce cognitive load, with the cockpit HMI displaying only information critical to the ride, and the non-essentials relegated to the rider's phone. This hybrid layout allows for swift navigation and intentional user inputs. With minimal displayed content, readability is improved and glance times are reduced.

Learning Outcomes

  • Extended my toolkit with new 3D workflows (Gravity Sketch iterations)

  • Improved the photorealism of my 3D renders (procedural shaders)

  • Discovered the technical constraints of motorcycle design & embedded HMIs

  • Designed with restraint, aiming to grab as little user attention as possible
